Ice and snow

Well this has been a bad winter.  Ice one day, snow the next, ice the next.  I am sooooo tired of shovelling.

Lots of people were here on Boxing Day... which was yesterday and they were wandering around chatting with everyone who was out shovelling.

Here are some photos.

This is a Beer Bush. You need to drink something to keep you picking away at the inch or two of ice. (Click to enlarge).  You can see that ice is covering the entire bush.

Photo of the Outback as seen through the icy trees.

The lake on December 25th. (Thanks Judy for some of the photos, I took the rest).

The lake on December 26th... Judy said: " these 2 pictures were taken 16 hours apart. Overnight we have had almost 4" of snow (21 cm)"

Photo of a rental cabin.  It has two sets of bunk beds, a sitting area and small kitchen area.

This is a closeup of a bush that is COVERED in ice. The trees look like this too... which is why there is so much damage in the Toronto area.

Taken across the lake.

The rink on the lake has not been shovelled in a while.  It is not wise to go on the lake.

We were at the Clubhouse today and watched a few games of darts.  Only the dart players were there.  Where are all the people who used to show up during the Christmas holidays?

The roads are clear and wide... and are being maintained on a regular basis.  Very nice.  Thanks Rosie!

It's 23F at the moment... with no wind so it is not really cold out.

A bunch of us were out carolling around the park on Christmas night.  There were a few people here and they all seemed to  enjoy it.  We did have to pound on Royce's door to wake him up ... heh heh.  We are now officially known as 'The Sortilege Singers'... look it up ;-D

All the trailers and sheds are fine in the seasonal area ... the ice load has not done any damage.

The Bare Bistro is closed this week.

That's it for now.  I will leave you with a photo of a house with a beautiful set of Christmas lights on the front porch...

Weather alert

As a lot of you are trying to travel in the ice conditions... I thought I would post a weather map for you.

Click on map to enlarge.

Ice Everywhere

Incredible.

This place is covered in ice.  There is at least half an inch on my decks... on my car... on the roads... everywhere.

It will take at least half an hour to scrape the ice off my car... but at least I have a cloth cover on the windshield... that will make it a LOT easier.

Here are two photos of Judy's car... covered in ice...

She has a cloth cover on her windshield too.

Here is a photo of the covered chairs on the deck (Thanks Judy!).

Plus the Christmas lights in the tree.

The temperature is 31F... hovering right below zero so it isn't going to melt any time soon.

There is NO salt or sand on the roads here so drive slowly or you will end up in the ditch or the forest.  Calling CAA won't help today as it will be tomorrow before they show up.

People are actually out and about... walking around.  I hope they have crampons or cleats on their boots.

I hear there is another ice storm coming tonight.

I just watched a bird land on my deck... and skid right off.  I threw seeds around this morning... they are very hungry birds as everything is frozen.

What is with this weather??!!  I'm tired of the winter already. Actually I was tired of it mid-November ha ha ha.

The official Bare Oaks Blog last week said:

"Together with the Bare Bistro and the GTA Skinnydippers, Bare Oaks is in the Christmas spirit of giving. You can see the lovely and very tall Christmas tree we have standing in the clubhouse dining room. Please bring an unwrapped gift for a child. We are collecting gifts for children ages infant to late teens. If you would like to make a financial donation, we will put your name on a Christmas decoration and you can hang it on the tree!

You can contact the Bare Oaks office, Liz in the Bare Bistro or Ron at GTA Skinnydippers.

In the famous words of Santa in the poem 'Twas The Night Before Christmas :
Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!*

Note: the office/store will be closed Christmas Eve (Dec. 24), Christmas Day (Dec. 25), Boxing Day (Dec. 26) and New Year’s Day (Jan. 1) but facilities are always open to members using their key fob."

Four more sleeps until Christmas. I hope you are finished with your shopping.  Today is supposed to be the WORST shopping day of the year.  Don't worry though, it is probably mostly guys out there wandering around aimlessly.  Ok ok, that was a shot. (snickering)

The lake appears to be thawing.  Don't go on it.

I checked the basement of the Clubhouse yesterday and there is no change.  I thought it was going to be reorganized?

There is a rink being built near the Clubhouse soon.  If the outline had been in place, the rink would be covered in ice today.

Tonight (starting at 7:30) at the Clubhouse, we have: "Christmas videos part 5: Saturday the 21st: "For our final Christmas viewing for this year we have “Frosty the Snowman” & “The Muppet Christmas Carol”"

The roads have been plowed.  The first attempt was not successful as it looked like the blade was too high... the second attempt worked a lot better. The roads are icy, they cannot be plowed now due to the ice and you can't plow ice anyways.

That's all the excitement for this week.

Saturday

Cold !

Cold !!

Cold !!!

It's 6F or minus 15C.  The wind is blowing and it is COLD.

We've had about an inch of snow all day.  It is snowing now but it's not heavy.

There was someone on the rink on the lake clearing it today but s/he gave up.  I guess the cold wind was too much.

I think there are darts happening at the Clubhouse.

Note:  The GTA Skinnydippers swim tonight IS NOT CANCELLED.  It is at the South Common Pool 6:30 - 9:00.

Tonight:  Christmas videos part 3:  "Tonight we will be showing a back to back special of “How the Grinch Stole Christmas”. We will start off with the cartoon released back in 1966 and follow with the more recent movie staring Jim Carrey. The first show will begin at 7:30PM."

Thursday

It's been very VERY cold the past few days with a much colder wind. It snowed last night again... but it was fluffy snow and only an inch or two deep.

Temperature at the moment is 15F.

The lake rink was started by Wendy and Kim.  While Wendy works to clear the ice Kim relaxes and skates (actually HE cleared the big skating area first!)  Thanks Judy for all the photos!

I watched a hockey game for a while (with about 4 players) yesterday during the day. I dug out three hockey sticks from my back shed.  This is the first year the ice has been good enough for skating as it is very smooth.

Today Susie and Mike cleared the rink.  It's a very cold job.

I always decorate my outside trees a few weeks before Christmas.  The balls are really big (about 7 inches across) even though they look small.

This is a little sparrow's nest found on the Bunny Trail. (Click photos to enlarge.)

This is a huge termite nest found in a tree in Cuba.  Hey, nothing like a little variety. :-)

A photo of Royce's jockey ... decorated for Christmas.

Royce's tree...

A closeup of a friend's cat's eyeball ... What?  I was on a roll with photos.

A song about a Christmas toy ... but only the refrain this time.

"It went "Zip" when it moved, and "Bop" when it stopped,
And "Whirrr" when it stood still.
I never knew just what it was and I guess I never will."

Remember that one?  It was The Marvellous Toy by Peter, Paul & Mary.

Snow

It snowed last night!  Only a few inches but it is packing snow... or is wasn't packing snow and is now melting.

It's very white out...

News from the BARE OAKS PLAYERS.

-------------------------

The first task at hand for this newly formed theatre group, was to name it appropriately.

Fourteen (14) names were submitted and most resonated well.

A committee was formed (the cast and crew of The Vagina Monologues) and with very little debate, we voted for Bare Oaks Players.
Thank you for those who submitted this name. Yes, we had more than one submission of the name.

Our first task is now complete, one that will identify our group and its mandate.

We will be scheduling an afternoon of readings to select our first official season playbill. Exciting!

Where: Bare Oaks New Forest Room

When: A Saturday or Sunday in March 2014

Here is something that may be of interest to some of you. The course is at the Sports Complex in Mt. Albert.  You will have to click on the photo to get details. I know that some of you are certified at the moment (I am). This sort of course comes in handy for saving lives (grin).  Plus you get a swell plastic card for your wallet.  You HAVE to register.

Yeah yeah, that has nothing to do with the Park but... it may come in handy at the Park.

Now, on to more pressing details.

I don't see a skating rink at the front... not sure of the status of the rink.

But... Wendy and Kim have shovelled off a large part of the lake so... you can skate there!

Has the basement been reorganized yet?

You should have the renewals/invoices for your site fees and membership fees by now.  Don't forget about the 3% discount if you pay by December 16.   If you pay by February 1, it is a 1.5% discount.  If you pay by April 1, it is a ZERO % discount.  :-)

Christmas videos part 2: "Come join us on Friday evening and continue the Christmas spirit with a showing of “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer” and “Jingle All the Way”. The first show will begin at 7:30PM."

Christmas videos part 3:  This Saturday night... "Tonight we will be showing a back to back special of “How the Grinch Stole Christmas”. We will start of with the cartoon released back in 1966 and follow with the more recent movie staring Jim Carrey. The first show will begin at 7:30PM."

Christmas videos part 4: Friday the 20th: "We start off this week’s Christmas viewing with “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” & “Home Alone”.

Christmas videos part 5: Saturday the 21st: "For our final Christmas viewing for this year we have “Frosty the Snowman” & “The Muppet Christmas Carol”"

For those of you who like movies...

------------------------

The temperature is 32F.  That is better than -40F or C.  Winnipeg is not a nice place to live.

It hasn't snowed all day.  The snow is not deep enough to plow or plough.

(Education 101: In American and Canadian English, plow is the preferred spelling of the farm implement and its related verbs. Plough is the preferred spelling in the main varieties of English from outside North America.)

I'll leave you with a very popular Christmas song...

Grandma Got Run Over
By A Reindeer

Grandma got run over by a reindeer
Walking home from our house Christmas eve
You can say there's no such thing as Santa
But as for me and Grandpa, we believe

She'd been drinkin' too much egg nog
And we'd begged her not to go
But she'd left her medication
So she stumbled out the door into the snow

When they found her Christmas mornin'
At the scene of the attack
There were hoof prints on her forehead
And incriminatin' Claus marks on her back

Grandma got run over by a reindeer
Walkin' home from our house Christmas eve
You can say there's no such thing as Santa
But as for me and Grandpa, we believe

Now were all so proud of Grandpa
He's been takin' this so well
See him in there watchin' football
Drinkin' beer and playin' cards with cousin Belle

It's not Christmas without Grandma
All the family's dressed in black
And we just can't help but wonder
Should we open up her gifts or send them back?

Grandma got run over by a reindeer
Walkin' home from our house Christmas eve
You can say there's no such thing as Santa
But as for me and Grandpa, we believe

Now the goose is on the table
And the pudding made of pig
And a blue and silver candle
That would just have matched the hair in Grandma's wig

I've warned all my friends and neighbors
Better watch out for yourselves
They should never give a license
To a man who drives a sleigh and plays with elves

Grandma got run over by a reindeer
Walkin' home from our house, Christmas eve
You can say there's no such thing as Santa
But as for me and Grandpa, we believe!

Freezing rain

Someone should remind me to do the blog :-D

Freezing rain today... but that is not stopping a lot of people from venturing up to the Clubhouse to take a hot tub.

We walked around Helios circle... very slippery.  Stupid idea in hindsight...

Three more weeks until Christmas... have you done your shopping yet?  HA HA HA.  I bet ... not!  I'm almost done mine.

Now to get past the Christmas parties and all-you-can-eat snack food... which is probably all diet food....

This week the lake has mostly thawed... and then frozen a bit... and then thawed.  DO NOT go onto the lake... or any other watercourse here.

D. was over at the Outback sunning nekid yesterday... no seriously... with a windbreak but... still sunning.

I hear naked bowling last weekend had about 80 people attending.  That is GREAT!!  It was in Streetsville/Mississauga .... wayyyyyyyyy  too far away from Newmarket.  There must be a lot of people in that area though as the attendance was high.

Not much going on...

I just checked the Bare Oaks events calendar here: http://www.bareoaks.ca/index.php/en/events.html

There are 'Christmas Videos' this coming Saturday.  Oooo.  If I have to watch 'It's a Wonderful Life' one more time, I may hang myself... lol.  Okay, sorry but... I'm usually blunt. Maybe they should show the Christmas cartoon movies sometime ... now THOSE are good.

On Saturday, December 14 at 6:30 PM

"Welcome to the GTA Skinny Dippers Christmas Party. Lots of Pizzas will be served mid evening. The features of this pool are a large kids depth area,..."

Location is shown only to members... here is the blurb: http://www.meetup.com/Winter-Naturism/events/152771862/

There is no Bare Oaks Christmas event this year.  The office is closed December 24, 25, 26 and January 1.

That's it for now... I will have photos next time.  Judy hasn't sent me any this week LOL.  (waving at Judy.)
