Wave Pool

Photo: Moose ... a member of Bare Oaks who has trained a lot of people to walk him every day.

Wave Pool update by Sandy: The wave pool was awesome. I think most of Bare Oaks were there. Everyone had a blast and there were prizes won. There was a contingent from the U.S. attending their first wave pool experience. Someone got out the 'toys' and we had a squirt war with rubber ducks, seals, lions and frogs. Volleyball games were held in the wave pool, while the squirt war was in the conversation tub. ;)

Temperature today is a balmy 29F (-2C). No snow overnight. The road to the back is plowed so you can drive to your trailer... if you want to do that.

The water has been off for about an hour but usually doesn't stay off long.

Skating time!

Cold the last few days, it is now 1F (-17C). Brrrrr.

Hot tub update: the health inspector was here on Friday and the tub PASSED! I have no idea whether it is open or not. Best to phone the office and ask 905 473 6060.

Wave Pool swim is tonight so I hope a lot of people attended! I'm headed in another direction so someone send me a writeup and I'll post it here.

Don't forget Monday night is women's night so come on up for a chat!

January is nearly over!! Only a few more months of winter left.

Photo: storms and flood in Arizona. Thought you might like to know that Arizona has it's problems too. ha ha. I'm going to keep you up to date on Arizona this winter because I feel you all need a break from the cold.

Temperature is 13F (-11C) here. Very cold today but sunny. No wind. Should be a good day to ski if you are dressed well. The rink is not cleared as no one has checked the ice and it is probably not safe yet as we had a thaw this week.

The road to the back is plowed so you can drive back there.

Hot tub report: none yet as I haven't checked with the office. If it is open, I'll post another note today.

Report from Judy and Dave as they are wintering in Quartzsite Arizona.

Weather here has been a little weird. We have had a couple of cold fronts go through giving us high winds (gusts 84 mph at times). The second storm was a little more tame with wind gusts of only 60 mph at times but rain, rain lots of rain. Torrential downpours (see photo). Even had a tornado reported 20 miles away. The good news, rain assures us of an abundance of desert flowers in a month or so. Now the weather has cleared and temps are back in the low 70's. It is supposed to warm up by weekend.

Thank goodness we are not in Northern Arizona. Lots of snow there. Friends here have been "snowed out" of their camp in Prescott since Martin Luther King Day. They run a camp on Mingus Mountain that probably will not be plowed out for a couple of weeks. Apparently nothing new to them.

The picture is the wash behind us. It is a really deep wash ... 15-20 feet. Normally it is dry with absolutely no water in it. The coyotes have their dens high along the banks and we see them patrolling the mesas early evening looking for their dinner (desert quail, jack rabbits, road runners, pack rats and whatever small game they happen upon). In the picture you can see the run off from the desert filling the wash which causes flash floods in the area. The water flows really fast and can get really deep. The washes all drain into Lyson's Wash which flows through Quartzsite on its way to the Colorado River. Khune Street in Quartzsite (one of the main streets) was closed because it had been washed out.

Windy and snowy today. Whiteouts. Cold. Temperature 6F (-15C). 2 - 3 inches of snow today. Front driveways are plowed. I don't know about the back but will let you know tomorrow.

Photo: a bit of snow.

It snowed a bit today but not enough to do any major shovelling.

Temperature is 29F (-2C).

Last night's 'women's night' was a lot of fun and good times were had by all. This is a weekly event so just show up at around 7pm next Monday.

Hot tub update: The health inspector is not going to be here until Friday. Stay tuned.

Rain rain rain

Photo: the lake is melting...

Warm today 34F (1C). Raining off and on with NO sign of sun.

It's difficult to walk around the park as the roads are solid ice due to the rain. Keep in mind that the roads are NOT salted so be careful getting in and out of your car.

I haven't talked to anyone in the front office today so I don't know if the hot tub was inspected but I'll get back to you tomorrow on that point.

Hot Tub

Photo: paddle boat at lake.

It snowed a bit last night but not enough to plow. The roads are clear.

The health department/inspector was supposed to be here on Monday (the 18th) to pass the hot tub but they didn't show up. On Tuesday they cancelled and are scheduled to arrive next Monday (the 25th).

It's a tad colder today 40F (4.44C).

Not much going on here...

January Thaw

The lake is melting (photo) so there will be no skating for a while... or skiing as it is slushy out.

Temperature is 39F (5C). Nice walking weather.

There were people up at the seasonal sites having campfires yesterday!! Yeah! A tad chilly but there are only a few months of winter left.

If you want a photo of your site posted, let me know.

Warm today too.

Photo: Ron checking depth of ice BEFORE the weather turned warm plus a summer aerial view of the clubhouse.

Warm again today. Slush on the lake so I would not advise skating, not that I would advise you to do anything but you might want to wear a floatable survival suit if you skate. It's a nice day for a walk though.

Larry (aka Gummy) is doing fine and is driving Syl to work these days.

Frank is wrapping those twisted trees at the Outback to prevent bunny damage. Last year (I think it was last year) the bunnies ate the bark at the bottom and the trees had to be replaced.

Hot tube update: Karen said... the health inspector is coming on MONDAY to check the tub. I will post again on what happens when he/she checks it.

Potable water in the Park: every week the health department checks the park water to see if it is potable. Every week it passes.

Send me photos! But please shrink them to 640 by 480 or (ideally) 400 by 300.

Thursday, January 14, 2010

Warm today!

What a day... it was 40F+ (5C). Nice walking weather. The snow is melting!

I say a coyote walking up the road from the back today... walking towards the front of the park. If you see one, walk the other way. They usually travel in packs.

Photo: chairs ... waiting for summer.

Sunny today. 14F -10C. Cold but no wind. It snowed about a half inch last night.

Outdoor Fun

It was a warm day today! Well, warm for January. Sunny too! Temperature was around 24F (-4C).

This report is by Wendy and Kim:

Winter is a time for fun so don't be glum! There's lots to do outside to keep warm and fit, like ski and snowshoe...

The days are getting longer, the sun is getting higher and the temperatures are warming up, making it very pleasant to partake in winter activities here at Bare Oaks.

The snowshoe trail is now in place and can double as a ski trail. It has some interesting loops around the ponds, front and back, providing an avenue for peaceful and exhilarating exercise.

So get motivated, get out there, alone or with a friend, work on your tan and blow the cobwebs out - naturally!

See you on the trails!

Photo: the NEW outside of the hot tub.

Gummy aka Larry is HOME from the hospital. He's doing well. Very nice scar :-0

The hot tub is not open yet. They are waiting for two parts and the health inspector.

Blowing snow today. Temperature is 17F (-8C).

No one has been snow shoeing or cross country skiing or skating.

More snow

Photo is the bridge at the back.

About half an inch of snow fell last night. Temperature is 24F (-4C). A dreary day, no sun. Three more months of winter... ho hum.

Tuesday, January 5, 2010

Warmer today

Temperature is 20F (-7C). No new snow today. Roads are clear.

I don't know the thickness of the ice on the lake but I will find out today and post it tomorrow. The skating rink has not been cleared today so you can't skate anyways.

Monday, January 4, 2010

Snow last night.

Not much change today although it snowed last night about an inch. A few snowdrifts around. The roads are fine but it is snowing again now. Temperature: 16F (-9C).

The lake rink is clear as Ron (of Ron and Cathy) clears it regularly. There is enough snow to cross country ski but I haven't seen anyone out yet.

If you are longing for warm weather, the photo is a picture of Judy and Maggie in Arizona. Maggs is getting a haircut. Weather is beautiful there, sunny and low to mid 70's during the day, temperature drops to under 40 degrees at night.

Sunday, January 3, 2010

Snow, snow, snow.

Last night and today it snowed... about 6 - 8 inches. It was very cold out as it was very windy. Lots of people shovelling.

Gummy update: he is doing well, up walking... s l o w l y though :-)

Hot tub update: not open yet. Hopefully the health inspector will be here this week.

Roads were plowed at about 2pm and they are all open.

At 9pm it is around 8F (-13C).

Saturday, January 2, 2010

Cold Today

It is very cold today. 9F (-13C) However the windchill makes it much colder... I'd say around minus 20C. The sun is out!

A couple of photos today. One is the pathway from the clubhouse towards Helios Circle (thanks Judy!). The other is the skating circle on the lake (thanks Sandy!).

New Years Eve Party Report

This report is from Sandy:

2010 New Years Dinner/Dance at Bare Oaks.

We had a terrific Prime Rib dinner with baked potatoes and veggies. Congrats to Don & Laura for the awesome meal and the midnight bubbly drink. Thanks again to Don & Laura for the music both during and after dinner.

A great time was had by all. It was a cozy family-like atmosphere.

For breakfast on New Years morning... Dean cooked his famous Eggs Benedict (or Florentine). AWESOME as always. Thanks.

Sorry, we couldn't cut a hole in the ice for Dean's polar dip, but the lake is 3" thick today.

New Years Update!

Thanks to Ron for clearing the lake for skating!! (Photo above). He is shovelling a circle around the raft. The ice is only 3 inches thick so it needs another few inches before I'll go on it. :-)

It's still snowing and just below freezing.

I hear the party last night at the clubhouse was great! I'll see if someone will write a review... Sandy? anyone?

Sylvia just called with an update on Gummy. He is doing well and asked her to bring him a coffee... ha ha. He's moving out of surgical care and into a semi private room today or early tomorrow. Excellent! More when I hear it...

Happy Newd Year!!

Snow, snow, snow. About 3 inches of fluffy snow fell last night! As you can see by the photo, it is still on the trees. It's around the freezing mark (32.7F / or ZERO C). No wind. A perfect day to cross country ski!

On another note, Sylvia asked me to let you know that Larry's (aka Gummy) operation went well!! However, she asked that you NOT visit him until Monday or Tuesday as he needs a lot of rest.
